In 1970 Grupo Poma decided to direct its business efforts towards the hotel industry, firmly resolved to grow in the future. With great expectations the company opened its first hotel in the five-star segment in 1972 in San Salvador, El Salvador. Two decades passed before the group built another hotel project in 1994, again a five-star hotel, this time located in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Years later, with experience and success in the field, Grupo Poma initiated projects to expand operations in other countries and the need arose to form a company exclusively dedicated to the hospitality business. In 1995 Real Hotels and Resorts (at that time known as Grupo Real) was created with a corporate philosophy of planned, sustained expansion and a commitment to permanently supporting the development of tourism in the region. Dedicated 100% to hotel administration and operation, Real Hotels and Resorts quickly became the best and most efficient hotel management business in the Central American region. In 1997 the company completed construction in San Pedro Sula of its third five-star hotel. From 1999 to 2000 the group entered its most rapid era of expansion, with the construction of five new hotels. During this phase the company built and inaugurated (in the vicinity of the international airport in El Salvador) its first hotel operating under a Choice Hotels International trademark, the Quality Hotel Real Aeropuerto El Salvador. The decision was fundamental to the group’s strategy since, having already established five-star hotels in every important city in Central America, a decision was made to enter the three- and four-star market segments under the Choice brands. As an integral part of this same strategy, the company acquired exclusive rights to the Master Franchise for Central America from the Choice line of hotels.
From its inception, Real Hotels and Resorts has operated successfully in alliance with three large hotel chains: InterContinental Hotels Group, Choice Hotels International and Marriott Hotels and Resorts. At the present time the group operates 21 important hotels in Central and North America: the InterContinental at Doral Miami in Miami, Florida; the Real InterContinental Metrocentro Managua in Nicaragua; the Real InterContinental Guatemala in Guatemala; the Quality Hotel Real Aeropuerto El Salvador, Comfort Inn Real San Miguel, Comfort Inn Real La Union and Real InterContinental San Salvador in El Salvador; the Real InterContinental San Jose – Costa Rica, Quality Hotel Real San Jose and JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort and Spa in Costa Rica; the Real InterContinental San Pedro Sula, Real InterContinental Tegucigalpa, and Clarion Hotel Real Tegucigalpa in Honduras; the Courtyard Panama Multiplaza Mall and the Courtyard Panama Metromall Mall in Panama; the Quality Hotel Real Aeropuerto Santo Domingo and the Real InterContinental Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic; the Bogota Marriott Hotel, Cali Marriott Hotel, JW Marriott Bogota and recently opened the Medellin Marriott Hotel in Colombia.
In 2006, the hotel’s group known as Grupo Real, changes its name to Real Hotels & Resorts. As a hotel chain operating and managing now 30 hotels in more than 10 countries, Grupo Real wanted to focus on their own brand: Real, and also wanted to explore on the leisure market with the development of new Resorts in Central America, understanding the importance that these countries are taking in regards of leisure tourism.
In 2013, Real Hotels and Resorts, S.A. is constituted to consolidate its Headquarter’s operations from El Salvador, an important regional hub.
